WorldStrides Teacher of the Year: Evelyn Johnson

Teachers are the heart and soul behind our programs. It’s the teacher students will remember. This year, for Teacher Appreciation Week, we asked students and parents who have participated in recent WorldStrides programs to nominate those teachers who have impacted their lives and encouraged them to pursue their dreams for WorldStrides Teacher of the Year to honor their hard work and dedication. Each day this week, we will announce a WorldStrides Teacher of the Year.

Our final WorldStrides Teacher of the Year is Evelyn Johnson, a French teacher at Mounds Park Academy in Maplewood, Minnesota. Read her nomination below!

“Evy (Evelyn) is a passionate and inspirational French teacher. Her students LOVE her classes. She infuses them with a depth of knowledge of French culture (her mother is French and Evy grew up in Peru and Italy.) This love of the culture inspires the students to really dig deep and hone their French skills.

“Nearly every one of them goes on to study abroad in college. Evy’s commitment to education extends to every child she teaches – regardless of their language ability. She works tirelessly to make French (and Spanish) accessible to students with learning disabilities by tutoring before and after school, breaking down linguistic components into easily digestible chunks of information. In fact, she is often called upon to tutor students in other academic areas, too.

“Within the school, Evy is always the first to volunteer for extra chaperoning duties or to serve on a committee. She is the leader of the 5th and 6th grade student council, organizing a large Halloween Carnival for them as well as Harry Potter Fest in the spring. Evy is also a member of the steering committee for our multi-year re-accreditation process. In short, Evy is a consummate professional who educates and inspires students. I can think of no one who could be more deserving of this recognition – particularly coming from WorldStrides.”
