Limerick - 5 days

Bunratty Castle

Bunratty Castle is one of the most complete and authentic medieval castles in Ireland. The castle hosts evening medieval banquets and takes the participants back to the time that the castle entertained its visitors with fine food, wine and song. Within thegrounds of Bunratty Castle is Bunratty Folk Park where 19th century life is vividly recreated. Set on 26 acres, the impressive park features over 30 buildings in a ‘living’ village and rural setting.

Limerick

King John’s Castle

King John's Castle is situated on 'King's Island' in the heart of medieval Limerick city. It was built between 1200 and 1210 and was repaired and extended many times in the following centuries. The interpretative centerat the Castle contains an imaginative historical exhibition which tells the story of the Castle. It offers panoramic views of Limerick City and the surrounding countryside.

Galway - 4 Days

Cliffs of Moher Cruise

The Cliffs of Moher cruise is a spectacular journey below these world-famous cliffs which tower up to 200m (700ft) above the Atlantic Ocean. This trip departs from Doolin Pier north of the Cliffs and lasts approx. 1 hour. It gives the visitor a unique perspective on the Cliffs of Moher that stretch for 8km. The tour includes English language commentaries on the fauna, the geology and history of the region.

Dublin - 5 Days

Dublin Walking Tour

Dublin is a city with a soul, a place that has not lost sight of the fact that people are more fun than museums and that genuine human interaction is not the preserve of small villages. Founded in 841 by the Vikings, it is a city with an interesting past. Its many monuments tell of its history. Today, Dublin is the Cosmopolitan capital of the Irish Republic and a city of over onemillion people. Despite the many changes the city has witnessed during the last decade, it still remains a city ready to welcome all who wish to visit. Taking advantage of its compact size, the walking tour of Dublin allows visitors to soak in the atmosphere and buzz of the city, whilst enjoying an informative and entertaining tour.

Meet the Faculty

Professor Oliver

Professor Oliver has been teaching at LSSU for 11 years. She obtained her Paramedic license in 1988 and her first nursing degree in 2000. She has worked in a multitude of nursing settings including Emergency Department, Employee Health, Long Term Care Management, and finally LSSU. She has enjoyed several trips to Ireland securing funding to bring the Irish Folk Musicians “Lunasa” to the campus Arts Center in Spring of 2014. Additionally, she was instrumental in bringing the Irish Christmas in America show in 2015 and the Irish Musicians The O’Shraves (SSM, Ontario) in 2016 to our campus.

Professor Sommers

Professor Sommers has been a nurse for 16 years, working as an RN and nurse practitioner in intensive care, family practice, and emergency nursing. He has taught at LSSU since 2020. His own time studying abroad and serving with the Peace Corps in Uzbekistan feed his enthusiasm for diverse international learning. He looks forward to exploring with students the culture, history, and healthcare of Ireland.
INTD 200: Special Topics: Cultural, Interdisciplinary, and Healthcare Issues of Ireland (1,0) 1 credit hour. Students will prepare for an educational experience in Ireland by learning about cultural sensitivity, historical and cultural influences of Irish healthcare. INTD 200: Special Topics: Cultural, Interdisciplinary, and Healthcare Issues of Ireland (3,0) In this 15-day course in May 2023, students will travel to Ireland, visiting Limerick, Galway, and Dublin. Students in this course will be exposed to diverse perspectives of history, culture, and healthcare. Pre-requisite: INTD 200: Special Topics Culture, Interdisciplinary, and Healthcare Issues of Ireland taken in spring 2023. This course may be taken only once for credit.
