Ramapo College of New Jersey

Why London? This 2 credit Study Abroad course focuses on British Theater, Costume and Culture in England. Students will immerse themselves in British theater and culture by attending theater performances, visiting exhibits, museums, and historical both historical and contemporary, in London and Stratford. This course will link these visits to specific scripts and performances that students will read and subsequently view while in England. Students will learn the process and approach to theatrical performance through its history as well as set, costume and lighting designs and apply this knowledge to written analysis of theatrical performance that they will experience in London and serve as a foundation for class discussion. These scripts and performances will be in a variety of eras that reflect (or satirize) the culture, mores, and social structure of society in each. Learning will be enhanced by curator-led tours at museums and workshops at theaters like Stratford, the National Theater and the Globe. Students will keep a daily journal that they will supplement with students’ photographic documentation and online research. Students will also demonstrate this understanding in a final project accompanied by a final paper.
